VMware's positive second quarter was partly driven by a good performance in its European region. For the whole group, sales were $2.17bn, an increase of 13% on the same quarter last time.
License revenue was $900m, a jump of 15%, and turnover from services was up 11% to $1.3bn, meaning they make up the majority of VMware's business.
GAAP net income was $644m, including a gain of $231m on an investment in Pivotal Software. Without this gain, net income would have been up by 2% to $413m. GAAP operating income was $509m, an increase of 20% year-on-year.
Sales from the international business were up 15% and now represent 51% of the total. The company pointed to large software-defined data centre and hyperconverged infrastructure-led deployments with European telcos and service providers like T-Systems for the performance. It added that partnerships with cloud service providers in the UK, France and Germany are helping it to reach new customers. In June, VMware Cloud on AWS received its fourth major quarterly update, bringing the service to Germany.
“Quarter two was another strong quarter as we continue to see good momentum across our product and services portfolio in every region,” said Pat Gelsinger, chief executive officer of VMware. “Customers are increasingly relying on VMware to be their essential, ubiquitous digital foundation to enable their business transformation.”
